Do
you want to know how I got started in this affiliate marketing
business? Well, I'm sure you've heard the term "niche" tossed around a
lot, and how you need to pick the "correct" one and so on, and if
you're like me, you've stumbled over picking that niche for a long
time, and haven't actually done much.
That's what I did, and you know what finally kicked me
into action?
I bought a list of keywords. I paid for
already-finished
keyword research in a particular niche. Paid quite a bit for it,
too.
But it did get me moving, because I now had a niche
picked
out for me, and a list of topics to write about. So I diligently began
my research, writing articles and building a website and so on. I added
Google Adsense to my site
This niche topic I had purchased... It only had a list
of keywords that contained
the niche's main keywords. In other words, I had a list that looked
like this:
Each
keyphrase had the keyword of my niche in it: credit repair.
It was organized by number of searches per month. Thinking I would now
quickly become an expert in my topic, I threw up my homepage: Credit Repair and
proceeded to add my subtopics: Bad
Credit Repair, Credit Repair Agency, Credit Repair Services, Repair
Your Credit and so on, based on the top keywords on my
list.
It was tough-going. I wrote, and wrote, and wrote. I
built
my website into a resource of articles over the course of
months.
And my reward for all that hard work? A whopping 10 visitors a day. And
a whopping 6 pages indexed by Google. 6 pages of 40 that I had on the
site.
The
promised wealth did not come.
But
do you know what I discovered as I did my research for writing the
articles?
There were lot of sub topics in this niche that didn't
contain either the word credit
or repair. Topics
you would only know if you were an actual expert in this field. Topics
such as FACT Act and Bankruptcy Questions and Equifax.Topics
that should be linked to from the front page, if I were to be taken
seriously as a good website for credit repair information. And of
course I needed entirely seperate keyword lists based on these sub
topics.
So I strayed from my expensive keyword list, and began
making my own sub topics, based on my own research that had nothing to
do with my keyword list. And do you know what happened when I
redesigned my site with my new sub topics? After Google finally re-indexed
my site, I suddenly had all
my pages listed in their index, and my daily
visitor number skyrocketed by almost 500%!
Along with my
increased visitor numbers, my revenue jumped by almost the same amount!
Do you know
why?
It was simple.
Instead of building a website based on keyword research, I was building
a website based
on the needs of the niche itself! A simple keyword report
won't tell you that! You need to do research, dive in, visit forums,
read books; become
a subject matter expert!
That's the way to
build a website.
And you know
else happened?
Have you heard
of Web 2.0? Ug. I hate the buzzwords that become symbols of our times,
but the Internet is
in the process of transformation. How much so, and if it's enough to
give it a silly name like Web 2.0, who knows? But it comes down to
this: websites that amount to nothing more than a boring database of
rehashed articles are going to be struggling more and more and more as
time goes on.
To succeed in
website building means to succeed in community
building. Web 2.0 can be simplified down to that level. A website that
has a forum, and polls, and blogs, and interaction, and videos, and
audio, and software that can be run from the website itself. That is Web
2.0.
A site
built on Web 2.0 principals will beat out a dead "article
database" site any old day!
Make your
website a community player
in it's field.
So
back to my website. At that point it was looking a little better due to
my proper niche research. I added a blog to keep up with and comment on
the latest news on my topic. Suddenly I was pinging all the blogging
search engines. My traffic exploded even more. I now had repeat
visitors checking out what would be on my blog next! Once I had a
steady flow of visitors, I added a forum. This was so much easier than
I thought. It's hardly more than a single click to get it set
up.
Now
my forum is lively and buzzing with people that update it
automatically! I have tons of original content added to my site by
other people! It almost runs itself!
I also began
experimenting with search
engine optimization for web 2.0.
You may have heard of some of this recently: tag and ping, and MySpace.
Well, there's more. Essentially you need to begin
building
your website community off
your webpage as well as on it. My niche site is now entrenched in it's
keywords, on interactive sites and forums, all over the Internet.
Amazing marketing power in that.
You
must build your website to take advantage of these new fads and
technologies or you'll be left in the dust in no time!
If I had done
the proper keyword resea... scratch that. Niche research,
instead of a singular keyword list, I could have been so far
ahead by now.
