What exactly is Web 2.0, again?

I know, I know. Stupid buzzwords. I especially hate buzzwords in the context of corporate missions statements: “It is our business to enthusiastically administrate quality catalysts for change to allow us to efficiently network high standards in data while…”

Tee hee. That’s from Dilberts mission statement generator.

OK, big digress. But Web 2.0. Buzzword aside, is there anything to it?

Big, big “yes!” The simplest definition? “Encouraging web surfers to interact with websites instead of just reading them.” There’s more to it than that, obviously, but I’m sure you’ve heard of MySpace, and Youtube? Folks like you and me put up our profiles on MySpace, and videos of our cats licking their butts on Youtube; we OURSELVES create the content on these sites. THAT is Web 2.0.

It’s great for us webmasters, because it inspires us to be creative in other ways than just writing articles. In some ways, it makes our job easier, because “al”l we have to do is come up with the idea, implement it, and users will create the site for us. This is why we emphasize community-driven websites in our easy step-by-step website building guide The Niche Website Kit. Breaking it down into easy steps. We’re so tird of seeing people build websites with nothing more than rewritten articles and that do nothing other than just sit. Granted, if you have useful articles, then your site must be judged on those grounds. If you truly, truly have a great resource that people can use.

But how great can it be when all your doing is rewriting PLR articles? Articles that, in different wording, appear all over the Internet? PLR articles can be great IF you create an entire package: add links TO great resources, add interactivity, a forum, a news blog, and so on. THEN your PLR articles have more value than the other webmasters that are using them. THEN you stand out from the crowd. THEN you leave the others behind.

Interactivity is key.

And Web 2.0 is interactivity.

Here’s a great way to explore Web 2.0 in all its glory:
